The recall involves Tide, Gain Flings, Ace and Ariel liquid laundry detergent pod packets, which were made between September 2023 and February 2024 and sold in flexible film bags in the United States. The CPSC warned that eating a large quantity of detergent can result in death, especially among people with underlying health issues. There have been no confirmed cases of injury directly related to this packaging defect, the CPSC said. Consumers can check for recalled lot codes at pg.com/bags and compare them to codes at the bottom of their package. The CPSC has advised consumers to immediately put recalled bags out of sight and reach of children.

“The proposed acquisition is by far the largest supermarket merger in U.S. history,” one that would unite “the No. 2 traditional supermarket chains in the United States,” it says in its complaint. is correct on the numbers, but the key word is “traditional.” Traditional supermarket chains no longer dominate the grocery business. Kroger is a distant second to Walmart, with a 10 percent market share, and Albertsons is fourth (behind Costco Wholesale), with 6 percent. So even if Kroger and Albertsons merged, they would be only a little more than half of Walmart’s size.

Hong Kong CNN —With Hong Kong’s sky-high cost of living, residents like Andy Tsui have been looking for alternative ways to have more fun and spend less. Rather than spending his cash in his hometown of Hong Kong, he’s been crossing the border into mainland China to splurge instead. Such trips are noteworthy because, for much of Hong Kong’s modern history, the traffic has been largely — conspicuously, even — in the other direction. Hong Kong used to be the place where Chinese would escape to, not from. In 2023, just 26 million mainlanders — about half of the 2018 crowd — visited Hong Kong.

For instance, the U.S. has blocked shipments of cotton coming from China, a top manufacturer of popular clothing brands, because it was produced by forced or prison labor. While prison labor seeps into the supply chains of some companies through third-party suppliers without them knowing, others buy direct. Cargill acknowledged buying goods from prison farms in Tennessee, Arkansas and Ohio, saying they constituted only a small fraction of the company’s overall volume. For instance, about a dozen state prison farms, including operations in Texas, Virginia, Kentucky and Montana, have sold more than $60 million worth of cattle since 2018. “What for?”FOLLOWING THE MONEYThe business of prison labor is so vast and convoluted that tracing the money can be challenging.

CNN —As cases of salmonella infections linked to recalled charcuterie meats double, the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention expanded its warning in a new food safety alert on Thursday. That’s almost double the cases from the last update on January 5th where 24 illnesses and five hospitalizations had been reported in 14 states. The CDC cautions that the true number of illnesses is most likely higher and could also be in present in other states. The warning is now also being expanded beyond one specific lot number of Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler. Fratelli Beretta recalled more than 11,000 pounds of the charcuterie meat products earlier this month, but only one specific lot code.

Costco unveiled its new 44,500-square-meter store in the city often dubbed China’s “Silicon Valley” on Friday, drawing large crowds in search of bargains and imported products. People line up outside the Costco store in Shenzhen, China, during its launch on January 12, 2024. Social media was awash with images of people taking home the giant version of the bear, measuring five feet tall. Lots-o-Huggin' Bear was among the more popular products on offer at the Costco store in Shenzhen during its launch on January 12, 2024. In China, Costco faces intense competition from online shopping platforms, such as Taobao and Pinduoduo, in a market where consumers are accustomed to online retail.

But at other chains, where the practice is less consistently enforced, there have been accusations of racial bias. One response to this has been the addition of self-checkout lines. According to a video presented by Walmart executives, Sam’s Club will now have customers go through a gate-like portal rather than having an employee stand at the door and check individual receipts — an innovation that Ms. Crozier described as reimagining the future of retail. The portal is equipped with what Walmart said in a news release was “computer vision and digital technology” to verify purchases. The technology is currently at 10 locations, but Ms. Crozier told the audience that the company hoped to make the change at all of its roughly 600 locations by the end of the year.

New York CNN —Walmart is joining the AI, drone and tech race. The superstore announced that it is offering drone delivery for up to 75% of the Dallas area’s population, or about 1.8 million homes. But drone delivery as a concept isn’t new, and Walmart’s timeline to take off in Dallas is remarkably short. Normally, customers who need to shop for a Super Bowl party search for items on the Walmart app individually, the company said. Walmart also announced advancements in its InHome service, which it debuted in 2019 to deliver groceries straight into customer’s refrigerators.

New York CNN —Walmart announced Tuesday that it is making changes to create a calmer shopping experience, at least for a few hours every day in all of its US stores. Set to be implemented on Nov. 10, the changes include setting in-store TV walls to a static image, turning off the radio, and lowering the store lights. The retailer told CNN that the changes, for now, will roll out only at its Walmart locations and not at its Sam’s Club warehouse locations. Federal health officials are warning parents and caregivers not to buy WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit purée pouches or feed them to their children because the product may contain elevated levels of lead. North Carolina health officials analyzed multiple samples of the fruit purée and detected “extremely high concentrations of lead,” the agency added. reviewed the findings and said that those lead levels “could result in acute toxicity.”The fruit purée pouches are sold nationally and are available through multiple retailers including Sam’s Club, Amazon and Dollar Tree. REUTERS/Kamil Krzaczynski/File Photo(Reuters) -Walmart corporate staff are getting new titles and pay packages in the coming weeks to manage labor costs and simplify the structure of the company’s workforce, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday. Starting in November, many corporate workers at Walmart and Sam’s Club, its warehouse chain, will be reclassified into fewer groups of possible titles and pay. Base pay and total bonus benefits won’t fall for any workers. Around 4%, or 2,000, will receive an eventual reduction in stock-option awards as part of the change, the report added. Paris/London CNN —Two of the largest retail chains in France have announced they will forego all profit on fuel sales, yielding to government pressure to sell gasoline and diesel at cost. “From September 29, the 750 service stations of Leclerc hypermarkets will be selling petrol ‘at cost price’ every day. This, of course, means with no profit,” Michel-Edouard Leclerc, president of the E. Leclerc group, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, Tuesday. Making zero or very little profit on fuel sales may be new for French retailers but their US counterparts have been doing it for years. Gasoline sales at the warehouse clubs are an important part of their business and draw customers inside.

Walgreens has been shifting away from pharmacy and retail to focus more on health care services, with mixed results. “While the wisdom of this move is debatable, health care is not Ms. Brewer’s forte.”Before joining Walgreens, Ms. Brewer was the chief operating officer of Starbucks and previously served as chief executive of Sam’s Club, a division of Walmart. As Walgreens leans more into the health care business, it faces several hurdles, industry experts said. It is rare for a woman to replace another female chief executive.

Washington, DC CNN —Florida is America’s inflation hotspot, thanks to a persistent problem with sky-high housing costs. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area has the highest inflation rate of metro areas with more than 2.5 million residents, with a 9% inflation rate for the 12 months ended in April. Urban Hawaii had the second lowest inflation rate at 2% — mirroring the Federal Reserve’s target for its preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index. Can Costco maintain its edge over Sam’s Club?

The U.S. warehouse club industry, which includes Costco , Sam's Club and B.J. With over 65 million paying members, Costco controls the lion's share of the market. But Walmart-owned Sam's Club is tweaking the formula, betting that investments in robotics and technology can help it better engage with budget-conscious shoppers and take on its competitors. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon called Sam's Club an "innovation engine for the company" during an August 2021 earnings call. So how do warehouse clubs like Sam's get members to pay to shop?
Sam’s Club is expanding its supply-chain network as it looks to build on recent e-commerce sales growth by speeding up order fulfillment while cutting shipping costs. Sam’s Club said its plan is to shrink the average distance between its supply-chain facilities and its stores and members. Sam’s Club said it is designing its new stores to have more space for curbside pickup and delivery orders. The first new Sam’s Club fulfillment center is expected to open near Atlanta in the third quarter of this year. Mr. Godsey said Sam’s Club will employ the same number of people it would have without automation so it can handle more volume.
